About the event

“Rhapsodic Dreams”, an exclusive month-long art exhibition at The Corridor, brings captivating paintings and sculptures to Doha

Grand Hyatt Doha is hosting “Rhapsodic Dreams” by the internationally acclaimed artist Yannis Stylianides, under the auspices of H.E. Mr. Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, the minister of Energy, Industry and Tourism of Cyprus. This exciting exhibition will be inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Charalambos Panayides, the ambassador of Cyprus in Qatar, on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, and will be open to the public until December 10, 2016.

Born in Cyprus, Mr. Stylianides completed architectural studies in the United States and returned to his homeland to pursue his passion for creating art that expresses his feelings, thoughts and experiences. His parallel passion for sculpting and painting can be seen within the pieces chosen for “Rhapsodic Dreams”, which are being displayed for the first time in Doha.

Mr. Stylianides’ fascinating exploration of new techniques and materials in his creative process cascades onto his canvases and is etched in his sculptures. One of his main goals is to create art using original methods and distinctive combinations of materials. This exhibit includes a series of paintings created using a process he developed and calls “constructive torching”, where he creates a composition of paints and then uses a blowtorch to apply the paint to wood, creating a three-dimensional quality that allows the painting to be seen from different angles.

The “Rhapsodic Dreams” exhibition will include a series of his signature sculpted wood panels depicting plan views of cities, as well as several other paintings on canvas using acrylic paints. For the sculptures on display in the exhibition, he explored the use of reclaimed wood, completely transforming it into beautiful works of art.

Mr. Stylianides’ art is housed in many private and public collections in Cyprus, the United States, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Italy, Monaco, France and Greece. A painting from his “Cities” series has being featured in Saatchi Gallery in London, while another is in the collection of the CBC. Several of his large paintings are installed in the main lobby of the Hilton hotel in CY. The prestigious Artnet Worldwide Corporation called his latest solo exhibition in Seattle, Washington, a “must-see exhibition”.

Supported by the Hyatt Thrive initiative, The Corridor is part of an initiative by Grand Hyatt Doha offering a unique gallery space for locally based artists who wish to exhibit their work to the Doha public and international visitors alike. After a successful opening in the summer of 2015, and curated by locally based Australian art consultant Pip Hoy, The Corridor has now become an important addition to Doha’s thriving art scene.
